David Harris launched his business, David Harris Custom Made in October 2020. Leading up to the launch of his store in the middle of the pandemic, he had been consulting to people in their businesses and homes.
Even as he launched however, he recognized that his business model wouldn’t be exactly how he had always pictured it – after all, no one was going to work, and therefore custom three-piece suits were not required.
David is nothing if not resourceful however, and the conversation shifted. “We specialize in helping people to build life-time wardrobes. It doesn’t happen overnight but once you begin you can build a lifestyle through your wardrobe – beautiful, tailored, hand-made pieces designed just for you.” It’s a niche market but it allows David to live his purpose, which has been the foundation for his success.
“This started out as a small idea because I knew I wanted to help people feel good about themselves through what they wore. I was always offering advice and sharing my innate love of fashion with the people around me.”
Gradually, this grew into something bigger under David Harris Custom Made was launched. David’s next big goal is to have a large retail store in Sandton City offering ready-to-wear clothes as well as custom-made outfits. It’s a big, hairy, audacious goal, but David’s attitude has in many ways self-actualised his success.
“I feel alive through my work,” he says. “We wake up every day loving what we do. Yes, there are challenges, but when someone smiles and looks and feels good – there’s nothing better.”
David is a firm believer that things line up in your favour when you’re passionate about your dream and living it every day, but there are many small lessons and wisdoms that have carried David Harris Custom Made through the pandemic and beyond.
