Sasfin’s three-year CA Trainee Programme is a structured pathway aligned with SAICA to help trainees achieve the Chartered Accountant (SA) qualification while equipping them to become ethical and effective leaders in the financial services sector. Emphasising mentorship, professional development, and exposure to real-world scenarios, trainees emerge resilient, well-rounded, and ready to make a meaningful impact in their careers.

Sasfin’s CA Trainee Programme is more than a training ground—it’s a launchpad for future financial leaders. Aligned with SAICA standards, the programme provides a comprehensive journey over three years, designed to cultivate talent and foster excellence. Training Officer Dhesegan Govender shares, “I take immense pride in being part of the rewarding journey to train and develop our Chartered Accountants. Their growth not only propels their own careers but also strengthens the business. The impact of positive mentorship enhances a culture of learning and collaboration, creating a ripple effect that elevates every member of the organisation.”

Mentorship and Professional Growth

At its helm is Alveena Pillay, who describes the programme as “about shaping future financial leaders” – done largely through mentorship. Mentorship lies at the core of the programme, with trainees guided by experienced managers and senior executives. This guidance enables participants to build technical proficiency, gain industry insights, and develop their professional identities. For Yoni Rosenthal, a newly qualified CA(SA), the exposure to Sasfin’s senior management was invaluable. “Their open-door policy has been immensely important for my personal growth. Learning directly from leaders in South Africa’s banking, lending, and wealth management sectors has provided me with incredible knowledge and experience.”

Albert Blankson, another newly qualified CA(SA), reflected on how the mentorship from seasoned CAs who hold a variety of roles in finance, client service, and operations enriched his journey. “From observing their approach to business and engaging with them in both formal and informal settings, I’ve broadened my vision for what’s possible with the CA designation. This programme has shaped me into a well-rounded professional.”

Memorable Moments

The journey through the CA Trainee Programme is punctuated with milestones and challenges that foster growth. Albert highlighted the personal touch provided by the programme leaders, particularly Alveena Pillay and Training Officer Dhesegan Govender. “Their proactive efforts to understand our individual goals and their dedication to helping us achieve them created many memorable experiences.” Yoni echoed his sentiment by expressing his gratitude to them for their constant support.

For Yoni, the financial year-end of 2024 stood out as a defining moment as he and his team worked beyond what he thought was achievable. “Though it was immensely challenging, it taught me the power of resilience and the importance of a strong team. The support, encouragement, and positivity from my colleagues made the journey fulfilling and the year-end celebrations even sweeter.”

Skills for Success

Resilience emerged as the most valuable skill for both Yoni and Albert. The demands of the programme, coupled with exceptional mentorship, helped them develop the ability to adapt and thrive under pressure. Albert explained, “For many CA trainees, including myself, an articles programme is often the first introduction to the corporate world. It is inevitable that one will make mistakes, encounter setbacks, and face challenges while finding their footing. The resilience I learnt from the exceptional mentorship and support has enabled me to see challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth. It’s a mindset that will guide me throughout my career.”

Yoni echoed this sentiment, noting how the experience shaped his approach to both professional and personal challenges. “Seeing how Sasfin’s people at all levels adapted to difficult circumstances has profoundly influenced me. This resilience mindset has impacted every area of my life – work, studies, and life outside the office.”

A Pathway to Leadership

The Sasfin CA Trainee Programme partners with Atcor for support and technical expertise to create a programme that is more than just a qualification journey; it is a holistic experience that nurtures leadership, resilience, and innovation. With mentorship, real-world exposure, and a culture of support, Sasfin ensures its trainees are prepared not only to navigate the complexities of the financial sector but also to lead with confidence and integrity.
