In the first quarter of the year, markets were buffeted by constantly changing inflation and interest rate expectations and the spectre of another global banking crisis.

For now, markets are more optimistic about easier monetary policy, but central bankers remain resolute in their battle with inflation. That standoff will likely come to a head in the coming months and play out against the backdrop of the US's April/May earnings reporting season.
