Sasfin 67 Minutes...

On 18 July Sasfin staff committed 67 minutes of their time in service of others.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” ~ Nelson Mandela

In 2009, when the United National General Assembly declared Nelson Mandela’s 18 July birthday Nelson Mandela International Day, Madiba called on the people of the world to honour him by helping their communities.

At Sasfin, we strive to make every day a Mandela Day, by taking action and demonstrating that ‘actions speak louder than words.’ On Monday 18 July we once again had the opportunity to answer the clarion call as we honoured a man that crept into the hearts of an entire nation:  Madiba, Father of our Nation, our forever hero!  We iced and decorated 670 cupcakes, made 670 sandwiches and cut 670 blankets.

Cupcakes

We purchased the cupcakes which we iced and decorated from small business owner - Davy Tsopo, Cakey by Davy.  He was a dishwasher who lost his job when COVID-19 hit.  Not deterred by all the factors against him, he set out to learn how to bake by watching YouTube videos.  It is now him who features on YouTube as we met Davy when telling his story on one of our Small Business Showcase episodes in partnership with Mark Sham.

Fingertips of Africa

What was once a small charity with the founders buying meals for those less fortunate, spending endless hours at Government hospitals, sponsoring single-parent households, blanket handouts and the list goes on and on, two years later became a legal and registered NGO due to the demand of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After our event, the cupcakes, sandwiches, and blankets were distributed by Fingertips to their various feeding schemes – and - we helped start a small business with them whereby recent graduates of their Sewing Academy, Nthabiseng and Kelly, were donated sewing machines and half the blankets we cut will be edged by them and they will get paid per blanket they complete!
